These hand-held filters:

The 2 principles in low vision:

1. Short-wavelength light (blue) is the most scattered; eliminating it increases contrast.

  • To do this, blue is cut from 450 to 585 (wavelength) as cleanly as possible: this is the base tint.
  • This tint can then be varied in light intensity, giving a whole range of more attractive lenses.
  • Low vision patients are more sensitive to brightness: the more blue is cut, the lower the light intensity.

2. Lowering the brightness creates a diffraction spot, which improves ametropia.

Remarks:

  • Blue-violet rays are likely to be harmful to the eye (especially the retina); all low vision lenses cut them.
  • Good knowledge of filters and listening carefully to the patient make it easy to fit them optimally. When fitting for indoor use, choose the lightest possible tint and remove it before going outside so the iris can adapt to the strong outdoor light; otherwise the eyewear may become a nightmare outdoors. For indoor use, it is preferable to use low vision tints at intensity 2 at most, except in extreme cases. Fitting well requires intelligence and flexibility, as there are no absolute solutions.
